Laugh all you want kids , but this is real. I’m a professor, and in 10 minutes, I can make my daughter regret she ever even thought of doing something wrong.

I grew up in an engineer home. Can verify.

“So, let’s talk about the physics of the ball’s path
. I’ve
prepared notes.”
“Nooooooo!!”
“Oh, I’m sorry. Did I say just the physics of the ball’s path? I meant this time we’re borrowing a note from Materials Science. If a 1/8" pane requires a given peak impulse to shatter and the ball has a known mass, we can calculate how fast the ball was going based on impact period and required energy! Let’s get started!”

I’m not sure if a “what you did wrong, how you should avoid it, who you should apologize to, when you should apologize, and why it matters” lecture is better or worse than a “LET’S USE THIS AS AN OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN!” lecture. I mean, the first kind, if you have a parent who’s a natural charismat who has the ability to make you
feel
can be bad, but the second might be a complete other kind of torture.

I honestly started out thinking it was better parenting to explain to the kid in a calm, rational way why it was wrong without yelling. I thought it would let be better not having histrionics that make her feel denigrated. Turns out it has the opposite effect. It makes her feel stupid and draws out the time focused on her misdeed/mistake. It makes her feel bad for longer than just imposing a consequence and moving on.

I am guilt of this. The kids dread another one of my “lectures.”
Then again, I’ve heard my daughter lecturing other people (mostly her brother) when they are wrong about something.
